Just a few kilometers southwest of main Amami Oshima, there are three smaller islands named Kakeroma, Uke and Yoro. A frequent ferry service makes Kakeroma the most accessible, plus it has accommodations for visitors who wish to stay overnight. People going to Uke and Yoro must be sure not to miss the boat connecting the islands, as it only runs once a day.
These sparsely populated islands showcase the wild beauty of Amami's subtropical forests and its meandering coastline. In addition to magnificent natural views, visitors can find reminders of WWII history scattered on these islands, including the remains of military ports and storage areas for suicide attack boats.
